                1. Something’s been bothering me about the latest Uber scandal. We’re predisposed to think that everything they do is scummy. triketora/838547773729423360

But I’m not so sure ‘Greyball’ is an example of that. I think it’s the result of some good people who are concerned about the drivers.

Police in cities where Uber is running illegally *know* they’re operating. The app works, which it usually doesn’t outside of the zone.

The police don’t go after Uber employees. They go after the drivers — the people being exploited by Uber. Greyball doesn’t protect Uber.

Greyball is a piece of software that prospects Uber *drivers*. It’s an illegal, misguided, and ultimately futile way to protect them.

There’s lots of things we should be mad at Uber for. They’re not a good corporate citizen. But Greyball probably isn’t the right crusade.

I’m still off of Uber. The app’s been deleted since January. It’s not coming back.

Also interesting: Greyballing is *definitely* why you see phantom cars in the Uber app. designatednerd/838584480625459200
