__HarshilShah oatmurray Cicadas molting. They outgrow their exoskeletons very quickly after they emerge, so they shed them as they grow. At the top, you’re seeing a cicada (in tan) emerge from its old chitin (in brown). The brown exterior shells are left behind and the cicada’s exterior re-hardens.
